If you go back and look at old textbooks written prior to , math textbooks with word problems, normally you’ll find instructions in the back for how to use your slide rule to do the calculations. And so you’ll see chapters at the very beginning of your math book on how you use your slide rule before they actually get into the trigonometry.   For this, just note that you can use either index (the "1"s at either end) interchangeably. So move the cursor to mark your index that's still within the scale, and slide the slide to put the other index at the cursor. Like, say you were taking 2•7 in that setup I showed a few lines up.

The specific requirements or preferences of your reviewing publisher, classroom teacher, institution or organization should be applied. In this way lateral pressure across the width of the slide rule is avoided and highest practicable accuracy standards maintained. If treated with reasonable care and attention your slide rule will give you many years of good service. This instruction booklet deals with the use of the slide rule in separate stages for each major purpose and File Size: KB.

If you want to skip the theory, and proceed directly to how to use a slide rule, see my How to Use a Slide Rule page for some downloadable manuals. You might also want to check out the various types of rules and the meanings of common scales listed on my Slide Rule Scales page. Incidentally, all the sources for the historical background. Thompson's original slide rule book was also updated in a second edition ("The Standard Manual of the Slide Rule") that many collectors feel is the standard slide rule reference text. Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the revised edition, but even this early work has a lot going for it.

The power of a slide rule stems from the interplay of the scales and the movements of the slide and the cursor. However, even if your slide was lined up with the scales on the body, but otherwise frozen in place, you could use your slide rule as a lookup table for a large number of formulas.

Some of them are listed in Tables 2 and 3. Additionally, The slide rule does not tell you where the decimal point is located in the answer. To do a calculation with a slide rule you reduce all numbers to scientific notation with digits then use the slide rule to perform the basic operations.

In a separate calculation you find the order of magnitude by combining the powers of There are two ways to do trig on a slide rule the hard way where you manually do floating-point calculations using a Taylor series, which lets you do most complex math functions even if they are not on the rule.

You could probably even use them to calculate logarithms on the slide rule to higher accuracy than the slide rule normally allows. This model is considered the most advanced slide rule K&E ever sold and was in production into the 70s, possibly up to when K&E ceased slide rule manufacturing.

For intro books I think a search for slide rule manuals will turn up dozens of suitable results, perhaps including a manual for the very model you end up with.

The metal "window" is inserted over the slide rule to act as a place holder. A cursor is fixed in the center of the "window" to allow for accurate readings. The scales (A-D) are labeled on the left-hand side of the slide rule. The number of scales on a slide rule vary depending on the number of mathematical functions the slide rule can perform.

The text appears not to have been revised since these three Illinois Institute of Technology engineering professors helped invent the Versalog slide rule and wrote instructions for.

Obviously most of us aren't going to use a slide rule for day to day math in jobs or school, but sometimes it's interesting to see how these old tools work. A book from the same era as my recently acquired slide rule was the best introduction I could have asked for.

It gave the foundations necessary for the on-line manuals available for the Reviews: 8. The slide rule and other instruments which give the same facilities for rapid calculations, are covered by the term "Mechanical Calculation". It is unfortunate that, for some reasons not easy to see, the slide rule is sometimes regarded as a difficult instrument with which to become proficient.

There is a. ?v=xYhOoYf_XT0 There are plenty of videos out there to teach you how to do the basics, but Ill go through the detail that you need to. Here I cover the most basic operations of a slide rule: multiplication/division and squares/square roots.

Hope you enjoy it. Science & Technology. The Slide Rule The book, written by Florian Cajori, is the standard work on the early history of the slide rule.

There is also a version as a Word document which is smaller ( Kb). More details on the book are given here. : Teach Yourself the Slide Rule. This is almost a complete book. Slide Rule explains a lot. As a child, little Nevil skips school to spend the day in the science and technology museum.

When he grows up, he's an engineer. The title refers to a point in the book where he is working with other engineers on calculations for an airship design problem,4/5. Let’s make a “slide rule”. Take two yard sticks and put them one above the other on a table.

Now “slide” the left edge of the top yard stick to 2, then read below 3 on the top yard stick and you get 5 on the lower yard stick. You have done additio. Slide Rule Simplified by This book arrived in its own box, packaged with a Dietzgen P National Slide Rule.

It can make some sense to do it in chain repeated calculations. Addition (and subtraction) is based on a formulas (u+v)=v*(u/v+1) (u-v)=v*(u/v-1) u+v, u-v (C, D) Let v be operand with smaller mantissa.

Slide Rule - How To Use It This book published by Barnes & Noble has a series of examples, problems and answers for common slide rule types.

Some of the problem areas covered include Area, Volume, Trigonometry, Mechanics, Civil Engineering, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering and Thermodynamics. how to use dual base log log slide rules by Professor Maurice L. Hartung 1By putting special scales on a slide rule, these and certain other operations much more difficult than those shown in the above table can be done easily.

Unfortunately, having been replaced by the electronic calculator, the slide rule has fallen into disuse, which is a shame because it is an excellent conceptual tool for visualizing how to do computations with logarithmic numbers.THE SLIDE RULE The Slide Rule is a time and labor saving instrument for quickly solving problems involving multiplication, division, proportion, squares, square roots, cube and cube roots or any combination of these processes.

The operation of a Slide Rule is simple and anyone with a fair understanding of numbers can use one.My high school chemistry teacher () who would only let us use slide rules (and our brains) during the first semester.
